Fast, Easy and Accurate Anesthesia Coding

on your Apple iPhoneTM or iPod touch®

GasCoder is the premier anesthesia coding software developed for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.  The program contains the 2009 CPT (copyright 2008 by the American Medical Association) and the 2009 CROSSWALK (copyright 2008 by the American Society of Anesthesiologists) databases.

The program was designed by a practicing anesthesiologist, Dr. Richard O'Leary from San Jose, CA  for other anesthesia care providers and their support personnel.  The programming was performed by eminent iPhone programmer Nick Dalton of 360mind.com based near Denver, CO. Version 1.0 was released in March, 2009.  Version 2.0 was released in October, 2009 incorporating several changes suggested by GasCoder users.  GasCoder 2.0 has a much faster launch time as well as the features detailed below. GasCoder 2.1 (featuring the 2010 CPT and Crosswalk databases) will be available in early 2010.

How Does GasCoder help me with anesthesia coding?

GasCoder enables the user to enter a medical procedure keyword (or numeric CPT code).  The program searches the database to return a list of possible matches from the CPT database.

As shown, GasCoder highlights the portion of any word that matches the keyword entry for faster and easier review by the user.

The user next selects the desired listing, after which GasCoder returns the correct CPT code, its description along with the CPT anesthesia (ASA) code and its description, along with the base unit value for the procedure.

Scrolling down from the screen shown here displays the base unit value and any further notes on coding.

Clicking on the action button in the upper right corner of the screen brings up the sub-menu shown here that enables the user to save searches to a Favorites List and to email search results (to your billing service, your home computer, etc.)

The  Favorite List can be edited with standard iPhone editing techniques.  Lines can be rearranged as the user desires.  Entries can also be individually deleted if the user wishes.

GasCoder incorporates most of the commonly used medical abbreviations such as ORIF, ACL, CABG etc.  There is a table of abbreviations listed on the information page (accessed by touching the "i" icon in the lower right corner of main search screen).

Clicking on any of the links (ACL, AICD, etc) will take the user to a list showing all entries with that abbreviation.

When the program is first downloaded from the App Store, the CPT and Crosswalk databases are not included.  For security reasons,  the CPT and Crosswalk databases are stored on the secure GasCoder server.  The first time you run the program, your iPhone/iPod needs to be connected to the Internet either by Wi-Fi or by cellular network so that your handheld device can access the GasCoder server to download the databases.  The download is free and usually takes less than 30 seconds.

Once the database has been downloaded, the entire program and coding databases reside in the memory of your iPhone or iPod touch.  The files together take up less space than one song download. Since the database is stored on the phone, the program functions perfectly even if your iPhone/iPod can't connect to the Internet (such as in the Radiology Department of most hospitals).

GasCoder is an Officially Licensed Product of both

the American Medical Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

How Do I Purchase GasCoder?

GasCoder is available on the Apple iTunes App Store.   GasCoder retails for $149.00.  The purchase price entitles the owner to receive free updates to the GasCoder program itself and the CPT and Crosswalk databases through December 31, 2010.  The new CPT and Crosswalk databases are scheduled to be released in early 2010.  In subsequent years, new versions of GasCoder will be made available for purchase.

There are no other maintenance fees of any kind.  Once you purchase GasCoder, you are free to use it for as long as you like, since the program does not expire.  Database updates however will be required to keep your program up to date with the changes in the CPT and Crosswalk databases.

GasCoder is fully compatible with the new iPhone operating system 3.0 released by Apple on June 18, 2009.
